Crews plan to lift the new pedestrian and cycling bridge into place in one piece on Sæbraut at the beginning of next week, positioning it on the stairwells that have been built at Dugguvogur and Snekkjuvogur, weather permitting. Height barriers will be installed on both sides of the new bridge at the same time.

The work will take place at night to minimize traffic disruption. Sæbraut will be closed on this section during the night when these operations take place. More extensive closures can be expected and will be announced as the time approaches.

Significantly improves traffic safety

The new pedestrian bridge is located roughly midway between the Sæbraut intersection at Súðavogur and Kleppsmýrarvegur. It will create a new trail connecting Dugguvogur at Tranavogur and Snekkjuvogur.

The bridge is designed to significantly improve traffic safety for pedestrians traveling between the new Vogabyggð and Vogahverfi, especially for schoolchildren at Vogaskóli.

The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration recommends that contractors and transport companies inform their staff about these height restrictions. Drivers of larger vehicles should be encouraged to lower truck beds, fold down cranes and similar equipment to prevent accidents or mishaps due to the height restrictions.

Continued work on stairwells

Once the bridge is in place, work on the stairwells will continue. Crews will complete connections between the bridge and stairwells, install lighting and camera systems, finish landscaping around the stairwells and pave pedestrian and cycling paths. Elevators will then be installed at both ends of the bridge.

The project is a collaboration between the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration, Reykjavík City and Transport for the Capital Area and is funded by the Transportation Charter.

The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration oversees the project on behalf of the client.
