In Reykjavík, vehicles may only be parked within designated parking spaces that are marked by surface lines or different pavement materials. Reykjavík City's Environment & Planning Council approved this proposal this morning.

For safety and clear access

In many places throughout the city, drivers regularly disregard marked spaces, such as parking at angles where spaces are marked parallel to the street, or parking outside the designated areas. This endangers other road users, including drivers and especially pedestrians and cyclists.

This type of parking also obstructs emergency responders, including fire trucks and ambulances, and hinders the work of waste collectors.

Authorization to impose fees

Reykjavík Parking Service had not previously considered itself authorized to charge fees for vehicles parked this way under its governing Traffic Act provisions. With this special provision now approved, Reykjavík Parking Service has clear authority to charge fees for vehicles not parked within designated spaces. This applies to parking spaces on municipal land. Police in the capital area have reviewed and approved the proposal.

This will take effect upon publication in Section B of the Official Gazette, expected in about a month, and applies citywide.
