Construction of the new Arnarnesvegur between Rjúpnavegur and Breiðholtsbraut is progressing well, and many key projects have now been completed. The new pedestrian and bicycle bridge over Dimma is complete and open. Several sections of Breiðholtsbraut have also been paved, along with walking and cycling paths in Elliðaárdalur. A new bridge over Breiðholtsbraut has been poured, which is the largest single structure in the project. Arnarnesvegur and related construction is scheduled for completion in November 2026.

New roadway, paths and bridge now in use

Work in recent weeks has focused on finishing the new roadway at Breiðholtsbraut, and the section of road from Jaðarsel to Elliðaá has now been paved. The base layer of asphalt on Arnarnesvegur in Elliðaárdalur has also been laid.

Paving of the walking and cycling paths in Elliðaárdalur north of Breiðholtsbraut is complete, and they are now open. The new pedestrian and bicycle bridge over Dimma, which is part of the Elliðaá river system, is complete and open. The bridge is a welcome improvement for pedestrians and cyclists and better connects the pathway system in Elliðaárdalur.

Bridge construction continues

The new road bridge over Breiðholtsbraut was poured on Nov. 8. A total of 1,650 cubic meters of concrete went into the structure, the equivalent of 205 concrete truck loads. The pouring process went smoothly, and this is one of the most extensive concrete projects of the year. Finishing work on the curbs on top of the bridge is now underway, and crews have started removing the bridge deck formwork on the north roadway. Vehicle traffic now uses the south roadway under the bridge's formwork. At the same time, installation of sound barriers along Arnarnesvegur and Breiðholtsbraut is underway.

Underpasses and utility work

Main cold water pipes have been relocated and connected at the site of the new underpasses beneath Arnarnesvegur at Rjúpnavegur. Work continues on relocating the hot water pipe. Precast units that will be used to build the underpasses are ready. The units are scheduled to be installed in January.

Work on the underpasses beneath Breiðholtsbraut near Völvufell is also well advanced, as are the paths leading to them. The pump well for the underpasses still requires an electrical connection. Until that work is complete, there is a risk of flooding in the underpasses. Once that work is finished, the underpasses can be opened.

On Arnarnesvegur between Breiðholtsbraut and Rjúpnavegur, work on fill and stormwater pipe installation is underway.

Excavated material from the construction has been moved to Reykjavík City's Winter Garden. The Winter Garden is under development where the ski slope is located at Jafnasel. Most of the area has also been seeded.
