Festive spirit at the lighting of Reykjavík's Christmas tree in Tórshavn, Faroe Islands
The lights on the Christmas tree, a gift from the people of Reykjavík to the residents of Tórshavn, were switched on at Tinganes Square in the Faroe Islands on Saturday, Nov. 29.
This marks the 13th time Reykjavík residents have given the Faroese a tree as a gift, and the tree was cut down in Heiðmörk on Reykjavík Forestry Association land last month. The tree is a Sitka spruce, and Eimskip handled its transport to Tórshavn.
Sanna Magdalena Mörtudóttir, president of City Council, was in Tórshavn and formally presented the tree to the people of Tórshavn during a ceremony at Tinganes Square on Saturday. Mayor Elsa Berg thanked Reykjavík residents for the tree and the friendship between the two cities.
Yule Lads drove through downtown Tórshavn, entertaining onlookers. One of them then went up in an aerial platform truck and turned on the lights at the top of the tree, to the crowd's delight.
A crowd gathered to take part in the festivities. The weather in Tórshavn on Saturday was pleasant, and the Christmas tree is beautifully decorated. Attendees and passersby were offered hot cocoa while Christmas songs were performed.
