Reykjavík City has implemented the digital mailbox on island.is and now shares data with individuals and businesses through this method.
Individuals and legal entities have their own digital mailbox where specific personal information and messages from public authorities are published. By law, all public entities, including municipalities and their institutions, must offer data publication to individuals and legal entities in the digital mailbox no later than Jan. 1, 2025. The law establishes the government's vision of a centralized digital communication channel with individuals and legal entities through the digital mailbox on island.is. The goal is to promote efficient public services, increase transparency in case handling, improve administrative efficiency and ensure a secure way to share data with individuals and legal entities.
Publication in digital mailbox legally valid
When data is made available in the digital mailbox, it is considered legally published to the recipient. This means documents such as notifications, decisions, rulings, payment requests and summons are legally considered published when uploaded to the digital mailbox. Both general and sensitive personal information can be published in the digital mailbox, according to the Data Protection Act. However, advertisements or general information such as newsletters, changed opening hours or deadline reminders cannot be published.
Guardians have access to data for children under 18, except for health or court cases, which are only accessible until age 16.
Individuals and legal entities can request data in other formats, such as paper. These requests can be made electronically on Ísland.is or in person at district commissioners' offices. The data will remain accessible in digital form. Users can manage notification settings for new messages in the inbox on Ísland.is.
