The City Executive Council has authorized the Department of Environment & Planning to open the tender process for the construction of a new KR multipurpose gymnasium at Frostaskjól, which will significantly improve training conditions for participants of all ages. The building will be approximately 6,700 square meters, with the gymnasium floor covering around 4,400 square meters.

The facility will feature an indoor artificial turf pitch for soccer training, sized for competitive eight-a-side matches.

Assessment considers all divisions

An adjoining wing will house office space, a weight room, meeting rooms, and other areas to support the facility's day-to-day operations. The plans also feature indoor viewing galleries within the gymnasium and an outdoor balcony on the adjoining wing overlooking KR's main pitch. The needs assessment incorporated input from all of the club's divisions.

This is a turnkey tender based on preliminary illustrations from the building committee. The 2024–2027 budget allocates 2.5 billion króna for the project. The funding will be disbursed as follows: 100 million króna in 2024, 500 million in 2025, 1 billion in 2026, and 900 million in 2027. The tender documents will outline this payment schedule.

New land-use plan in effect

At its May 20, 2021, meeting, the City Executive Council approved an agreement with Knattspyrnufélag Reykjavíkur for the development of KR's grounds at Frostaskjól, which included Reykjavík City's participation in the construction of a new multipurpose gymnasium on the lot. The City Executive Council approved the land-use plan for the KR grounds at Frostaskjól on June 30, 2022. The mayor appointed a building committee for the multipurpose gymnasium construction in August 2022. Concurrently, a separate building committee representing KR is managing the overall development of the grounds.
