Studded tire use is declining across Reykjavík, according to a count conducted near the start of the month. Observers noted that just under a third of vehicles used studded tires in early December. Reykjavík City recommends quality winter tires to reduce pollution, minimize noise, and prevent wear on streets.

The City calculates the ratio of studded to non-studded tires on vehicles in Reykjavík six times throughout the winter. The count took place on Nov. 29th Data showed that 28.2% of vehicles had studded tires, while 71.8% used other types. This studded tire share falls below the 33.9% recorded at this time last year.

Two years ago, the figure was considerably higher at 39.6%, while it sat at a similar 29.5% three years ago. The share hasn't dipped this low during this season in nine years, dating back to a 25% mark in the winter of 2014.

With a mild winter in Reykjavík so far, officials encourage vehicle owners to choose quality winter tires.
