Imagine Peace Tower lighting event in Viðey canceled
The lighting ceremony for the Imagine Peace Tower in Viðey on Monday, Oct. 9, has been canceled due to weather.
Traditionally, a peaceful ceremony marks the lighting of the Imagine Peace Tower to honor the memory of musician John Lennon. The Imagine Peace Tower is the brainchild of artist, musician, and peace activist Yoko Ono, intended as a beacon for world peace. The Imagine Peace Tower will still be lit at 8 p.m. Monday on the birthday of her husband, John Lennon.
Elding, which operates ferry services to Viðey, says wind conditions make the crossing too hazardous and has canceled all ferry trips today and tomorrow. Although the weather may look fine, safety must always come first, and the decision was made in consultation with event organizers and emergency responders.
Although the event is canceled, the public is invited to watch the lighting via the live stream on the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER website at 8 p.m., play Lennon's song "Imagine," and think about peace.
