Reykjavík City's Department of Environment & Planning is holding an informational meeting about the Austurheiðar framework plan on Thursday, June 25, at 5 p.m. Architect Óskar Örn Gunnarsson from Landmótun will present the framework plan. The online meeting will take place here on reykjavik.is and on Reykjavík City's Facebook page. Inquiries can be submitted in advance.

The framework plan for Austurheiðar has several goals, primarily to ensure coordinated land use within the area to avoid conflicts of interest between current and future land use in the region. The land-use plan area covers about 930 hectares and includes most of Austurheiðar, Hólmsheiði, Grafarheiði and Reynisvatnsheiði. Within the area are Rauðavatn and Reynisvatn, along with the portion of Langavatn that lies within Reykjavík's municipal boundaries.

The main goals are:

  • Define and delineate areas based on their utilization.
  • Create a diverse and accessible outdoor recreation area for all age groups and various activities such as horseback riding, cross-country skiing, mountain biking, fat-tire biking, hiking, running, mushroom picking, berry picking, tourism and ultralight flying.
  • Determine and define the location of main road connections and walking, cycling and riding trails throughout the area.
  • Strengthen the connection between built-up areas and outdoor areas.
  • Strengthen the interaction and connection of Austurheiðar with adjacent outdoor areas.
