About Móðurmál – the Association on Bilingualism

Móðurmál has offered instruction in over 20 languages for multilingual children since 1994. The Sports & Leisure Council and later the Department of Education & Youth have supported and partially funded the program, along with other tuition waivers and grants. Volunteers and parents carry out this valuable work.

Móðurmál was founded in 1994 as the Association of Parents of Bilingual Children to develop structured language learning with clear curricula and goals.

In 2014, Móðurmál set the following goals:

  • Support numerous language groups and mother tongue teachers
  • Collaborate with parents of multilingual children and create opportunities for children to learn all their mother tongues
  • Participate in research on bilingualism and mother tongues
  • Develop mother tongue instruction
  • Support active bilingualism in Icelandic society
