From vision to reality

Department of Service and Innovation Annual Report 2025

Central administration

The City's central administration is located in Reykjavík City Hall.

Its role is to manage the operations of Reykjavík's City Council and mayor, along with other core administrative tasks.

The central administration includes the Office of the Mayor and Chief Executive Officer, Office of the City Council, the Office Communications and Events, and the City Attorney.

Increased use of digital solutions

The City continued developing the City Council's meeting management system this year to support meeting preparation and conduct. The system handles speakers' lists, voting, and other meeting administration, fostering a more efficient, transparent, and secure meeting environment.

Central administration offices worked with the digital transformation lead to streamline office tasks using Microsoft tools. For example, teams configured project schedules and recurring task overviews in Microsoft Lists. These changes improved project visibility, coordination, and tracking, making it easier to monitor statuses and task assignments. Moving forward, the administration can automate office processes to an even greater degree.

Automation and digital workforce

Throughout the year, staff systematically explored AI capabilities to improve efficiency and support daily operations.

Partnering with the Department of Service and Innovation, the central administration examined how Microsoft Copilot and other AI tools could support information processing, project management, and knowledge sharing. This initiative laid a vital foundation for developing and adopting AI solutions across the organization.

The administration also advanced task automation, collaborating with solution specialists from the Department of Service and Innovation. Using Power Automate and other Microsoft tools, teams streamlined numerous workflows and reduced manual tasks, freeing staff for higher-value work.

Development of reykjavik.is

The central administration joined a cross-departmental collaboration with the Office of Communications and Events, the Department of Culture and Sports, and the Department of Service and Innovation's web team on the project "Advancement and diversity on reykjavik.is." The project aims to advance reykjavik.is by improving functionality and presentation, making the city's public life more visible and accessible to residents and visitors.

This year's work focused on rolling out previously developed design for the website, specifically emphasizing an engaging presentation of events, culture, sports, and other leisure offerings. This effort supports the ongoing development of reykjavik.is as a robust service and information website that reflects Reykjavík’s diverse, vibrant community.
