Geospatial Information (LUKR)

Geospatial Information manages all databases containing land-related information. The acquisition, maintenance, processing, and delivery of geospatial information are the main tasks, but the division is also responsible for managing and operating LUKR, land surveying and publishing survey maps and property drawings.

The main responsibilities of the Geospatial Information division include

  • Creating and maintaining survey maps and property drawings
  • Land surveying
  • Maintaining coordinate and elevation systems
  • Managing location identification
  • Coordinate mapping of older properties
  • Managing and operating LUKR
  • Building and maintaining LUKR databases and connection tables
  • Managing City Viewer and Urban Planning Viewer
  • Obtaining aerial photographs
  • Map production
  • Recording, processing and delivering geospatial information
  • Updating regional plan figures

LUKR extraction site

Reykjavík Geographic Information System stores extensive geographic data about streets, buildings, lots, contour lines, utility systems and more in Reykjavík. This data is free and available in digital format that users can download through an extraction site.
To extract data, you must first log in with an electronic ID.

Reykjavík in 3D

Geospatial Information is transitioning to a 3D environment, opening up many new possibilities. Significant work in recent years on a 3D model of Reykjavík now makes it possible to view the city center in 3D. The buildings are drawn in Sketchup, mostly by Páll Heimir Pálsson, and can be accessed in 3D Warehouse.

Geospatial Information also has building massing models with elevation information, similar to what can be seen when viewing Reykjavík in Google Earth, but that data is from 2009 and provides only a rough picture of building appearance.

Measurements

Geospatial Information at the Department of Environment & Planning handles the creation and publication of survey maps and property drawings. The Office of Construction and Maintenance handles the creation and publication of elevation maps.

Information about data extraction

LUKR data is stored in the ISN93 coordinate system. It's based on Lambert conformal conic projection with two standard parallels, at 64° 15' and 65° 45'. The extraction system also offers to project data into the Reykjavík coordinate system, which may slightly increase processing time. Current data extraction format is for delivery in shape (.shp) and dxf (.dxf) formats.

Free data from LUKR

On the website, users can quickly access free data from LUKR databases in shapefile format. Everyone is free to copy this data and use it for their own purposes.

The relevant metadata can be accessed on the National Land Survey of Iceland website. The data can be viewed in City Viewer, and it is advisable to do so before copying the data.
