Designated parking
Disabled people of reduced mobility who have difficulty getting to and from a public parking space may be eligible for a designated parking space at their home. Such parking spaces are designated at the legal residence of individuals and only on land owned by the City of Reykjavík.
Designated parking spots, sometimes referred to as P-parking, are not the same as P-markings, parking cards for disabled people that you apply for from the district commissioners.
Am I entitled to a designated parking space?
In order to be eligible for designated parking you need to fulfill the following conditions:
- Have a permanent address in Reykjavík.
- Live with a chronic motor impairment that prevents you from using regular parking at your home.
- Possess a P-sign, a parking permit for people with reduced mobility.
The parking space you're applying for should be on land owned by Reykjavík City. A designated parking spot will not be allocated if your home has a parking spot.
How do I apply for P-parking?
You fill in the application form on My Pages. You must also submit the following supporting documents:
- Photo of a P-card, issued by a district commissioner.
- Medical certificate with information on mobility.
A joint ownership agreement may be requested if no information on parking accompanying a property is available.
What happens next?
The application is processed. The medical certificate will be reviewed with any other documentation submitted with the application, to see if all conditions are met.
If you meet the requirements, the Department of Environment & Planning of Reykjavík City will assess the location, seek the opinion of the Reykjavík Parking Service if it is within an area of paid parking, and propose a delineation for the parking area to the Environment & Planning Council. The accessibility officer of Reykjavík City is also consulted. If the Environment & Planning Council does not give approval, the provision of a designated parking spot may be denied.
If your application is denied, and you believe there are exceptional circumstances, you can request a review by the Welfare Council Appeal Board.
If an application is accepted, a written agreement is concluded with a provision for notification of the change of circumstances, e.g. if the person moves or no longer has a need for the parking spot. The maximum duration of the contract is 5 years.
Who installs parking signs at the designated spot?
Reykjavík City prepares and installs the signs for the designated parking space. The applicant pays for the sign itself, but not the installation. If changes need to be made to the streets or parking lots on City land for the installation of the sign, this is at the expense of Reykjavík City.
