Intercultural Conference of Reykjavík City
The Intercultural Conference offers a unique platform for people of diverse backgrounds to come together and share their knowledge, have lively discussions, and enjoy the day together. The Conferences’ objectives are communication, democracy, and attitudes.
Reykjavík City ‘s Intercultural Conference will take place at Hitt Húsið on the 4th of May 2024.
The Conference is an essential forum for active discussion regarding people of foreign origin and immigrants in Reykjavík. Reykjavik City is an intercultural city, and 25% of its residents are of foreign origin.
Language, literature, and inclusion will be a focal point at the Intercultural Conference. For the first time at the Conference, a seminar for youth to discuss the experiences of youth and ethnic minority backgrounds takes place.
Registration for each seminar is required. By clicking on the title of the seminar, the registration opens.

10am - 11am - Opening session
- Projects from the intercultural city of Reykjavík will be showcased.
11:30am - 12:15pm - Seminars
- Intercultural Competency - Do we all sit at the same table?
- Mini-course on intercultural competency
- Is the key to inclusion within well-translated literature?
- Eliza Reid, First Lady of Iceland, leads a seminar where Hallgrímur Helgason, Veronika Egyed, and Luciano Dutra discuss the importance of translations.
- How do we develop community interpreting in a changing society?
- Birna Imsland talks about the growing need for community interpreting, what is done well, and what can be improved in the profession.
12:15pm-12:45pm
- Light refreshments from Á Bístró.
12:45pm - 1:30pm - Seminars
- Open, Safe and Respectful Dialogue – a chat about diversity and empowerment.
- For young people of foreign origin aged 13-16.
- Icelandic spoken with an accent – does it affect everyday communication?
- In the seminar, Stefanie Bade discusses accents, how they relate to individuals’ self-identity and more.
- “Just Go Home” is a conversation about cultural prejudice.
- Sema Erla Serdaroglu hosts a seminar discussing cultural prejudices in both international and Icelandic contexts.
2:15pm - 3pm - Panel discussion
- Nothing about us without us - Women of foreign origin in public discourse.
- W.O.M.E.N invites you to a panel discussion with women from diverse sections of society. The aim is to explore the status, challenges, and opportunities of women. The audience is welcome to ask questions.
- Cultural ambassadors
- Come meet the Cultural ambassadors. Mirabela Blaga will introduce the Cultural Ambassadors, located in South center, and the many obstacles they have faced.
3pm - Closing session
- Artist Andervel closes the conference.
