Car and bicycle parking policy

According to the Reykjavik Master Plan, the criteria for the number of parking spaces must be reduced, especially in new building plots, and companies and organisations must be asked to adopt compulsory parking. A targeted parking fee plan should then be prepared in.

Rules for the number of car and bicycle parking spaces

The Code describes the requirements for the number of car and bicycle parking spaces, within the premises, in Reykjavik for new construction and/or renovation works. They are part of the car and bicycle parking strategy of the city's master plan. The rules are used as a basis for drawing up neighbourhood and division plans and for applying for building permits.

Review of the fee schedule and fee period for parking

The rules for revising the fee schedule and the fee period for parking in the city country, aim to ensure that the price of the fee period contributes to a 85% increase in parking usage in the city country. This means that each street lane or defined area has about 1-2 parking spaces available. The fee period will be extended and the fee will be taken up on Sundays where it is needed. In this case, the parking fee schedule will be reviewed annually and allow for the establishment of a quota for the maximum duration of vehicles in parking spaces, in order to ensure that parking facilities at shops and services are used primarily by customers. Why increase the number of chargeable areas?

The purpose of increasing the number of chargeable areas is to pursue the objectives of the CoR's Master Plan and to promote the diversification of the use of parking in the city's country, by regulating the demand for parking, thus supporting service providers, visitors and residents. Stakeholders, e.g. companies, organisations, residents and interested organisations, may request the introduction of a new tariff area by sending a request to bilastaedasjodur@reykjavik.is. When deciding on new charging areas, it is considered that parking usage is equal to or above 85% during peak demand periods or that charging is an important part of meeting the objectives of the Master Plan.
