Employment and engagement for disabled people

Employment is a significant and essential part of people's lives. Being an active participant in society positively impacts self-image and overall well-being. Many disabled people possess valuable experience and knowledge that can be beneficial in various jobs, but sometimes need assistance or workplace adaptations, accessibility features, flexible work hours and tasks that meet their needs, generally known as reasonable accommodations.

What is offered?

Disabled people are encouraged to apply for regular positions advertised by Reykjavík City. When hired, the city makes every effort to accommodate employees' specialized needs to the fullest extent possible. When assistance is needed with job searching, on-the-job training or support to maintain employment in the general labor market, supported employment (“atvinna með stuðningi” or AMS) may be appropriate. This service is provided by the Directorate of Labor.

Disabled people who are unable to perform general work duties and need more comprehensive assistance can apply for sheltered workshops, job training and engagement training that are tailored to individual needs regarding support level, duration and tasks.

How do I apply?

The Directorate of Labor accepts applications and will then schedule you for an interview where next steps are determined.

What happens next?

If it's determined that a sheltered workshop, job training or engagement support services are suitable for you, the Directorate of Labor forwards your case to the appropriate municipality. It is the municipality's responsibility to find appropriate sheltered workshop opportunities, job training or engagement support services.
