There are about 80 preschools in Reykjavik, both city-run and independent, with more than 6,000 children. Many schools have specially equipped nursery divisions.

The preschool is the first stage of school, where the children creatively learn everything between heaven and earth, and most importantly, to work together.

You can apply for the preschool that best suits you and your child. It doesn't necessarily have to be the preschool closest to your home.

Starting Preschool

Each preschool is unique. Some focus on communication, reading, or writing and others focus on mathematics, nature, and environmental issues. It is important that parents, through their presence, participate in the child's adaptation in preschool.

Preschool Enrolment

You can apply for preschool from the date the child is born. Children are added to the waitlist at the age of one year and by order of age. The guideline is that children who have reached the age of 18 months on September 1 will receive an invitation for preschool placement that fall.

City preschools are generally open from 7:30 am - 4:30 pm and the child can be at the school for 4–9 hours a day.
Five preschools are open until 5 pm, one in each district. These are the preschools of Hagaborg in Vesturbaer, Langholt in Laugardalur, Bakkaborg in Breidholt, Klettaborg in Grafarvogur, and Heidarborg in Arbaer.
