Request to appeal a parking citation

The determination of the citation for a parking violation charge may be appealed within 28 days from the date of the citation. The general processing time is 2-4 weeks.

Appeal procedure

Article 1.

The determination of the citation for a parking violation charge may be appealed within 28 days from the date of the citation. The general processing time is 2-4 weeks.

Article 2.

When a party is not the registered owner/keeper of the vehicle, it will simplify the process to have the registered owner´s name, ID number, address, phone number and email address made available. If the party is the owner/keeper of the vehicle, it simplifies the process that their phone number and email address is provided.

Article 3.

When requesting an appeal, it is important that the party has in their possession, documents that can strengthen their case. Such as a copy of the paid parking meter ticket or receipts for repairs/towing of the vehicle. Documents for the case can be submitted to the following email bilastaedasjodur@reykjavik.is or through general postal service within 7 days. The case then goes into processing. There is no need to submit a copy of the citation (parking ticket).

Article 4.

Reykjavík Parking Service may obtain confirmation of the information that is presented during the appeal process. Depending on the nature of the case, information may be retrieved from Registers Iceland, phone parking service, Iceland Transport Authority, and the City Viewer.

Article 5.

Reykjavík Parking Service may obtain information from district commissioners regarding the issuance and time validation of parking cards for people with reduced mobility. It is important that the name and ID number of the holder of the parking card for people with reduced mobility is available if it is different from the registered owner/keeper of the vehicle.

Article 6.

Reykjavík Parking Service will ask for comments from the server of the citation and will use photographs from the scene to make a decision during the appeal process.

Article 7.

When requesting to appeal a parking violation charge from a police officer’s citation, the process will be forwarded to Chief of Police of the Capital Region for processing.

Article 8.

Once a request for an appeal has been received, extra late fees are mandatory in accordance with traffic laws throughout the processing time. The penalty and charges will be canceled if the appeal is granted but, if the appeal is denied, the extra charges will be reduced back to the original penalty as it stood when the appeal was received—with the exception that cash discounts are only granted if paid within 3 business days of the date of the citation. Parties are reminded that they have the option of paying the charge despite requesting an appeal and getting it reimbursed if the appeal is granted.

Article 9. Parking citations at Landspítali — The National University Hospital of Iceland

When requesting to appeal a parking citation received at the Landspítali Hospital, the party should send an email to staedi@landspitali.is to request a Verification of Emergency to be sent to Reykjavík Parking Service.

Request for justification

Justification for the citation may be requested within 14 days from the date of the citation.

An email must be sent to upplysingar@reykjavik.is stating the license plate number and citation number and noting in the subject line that a justification is requested.
