The Resident Council of Grafarvogur
Resident councils are an active platform for dialogue between residents, the district grassroots, non-governmental organizations, the economy, and City officials. The resident councils are active participants in the implementation of district policy-making that consult on the activities of district service centers, and help to promote social wealth in the districts of Reykjavík.
The Resident Council of Grafarvogur acts under the authority of the City Council as detailed in Resolution on Resident Councils and the Resolution on the Management of Reykjavík City and City Council Minutes, No 1020/2019.
The role of resident councils is to strengthen connectivity and shorten the channels of communication between residents and the city administration, to promote greater disclosure of information to residents, to strengthen residents’ ability to present feedback, and to raise awareness of challenges within the districts.
Resident councils are an active platform for dialogue between residents, the district grassroots, non-governmental organizations, the economy, and City officials. The resident councils are active participants in the implementation of district policy-making that consult on the activities of district service centers, and shall help to promote social wealth in the districts of Reykjavík.
The resident councils also contribute to the promotion of urban planning, implementation, and services in the districts and engage in dialog with residents, as is required in each case. When it concerns the district, the appropriate resident council shall receive, and promote, announcements for planning changes, fundamental changes to services, and larger public works, such as for maintenance of city land and spring and winter services.
The Reykjavík City District Fund supports local associations, residents, and other stakeholders who want to contribute and host district-related programs and/or events with the above objectives in mind. The decision on the allocation of funds from the Reykjavík City District Fund is taken by the Reykjavík City resident councils.
Each resident council has six representatives. City Council elects three representatives and three alternates. A minimum of two City Council representatives shall be from the group of City Councilors or Deputy City Councilors. One representative and one alternate are appointed by the district residential association, and one representative and one alternate is appointed by the district parental association. One representative and one alternate are randomly selected from among the district's residents. City Council elects the chair of the resident council from the group of elected representatives. The resident councils divide other tasks on their own.
City Council elected members to the Resident Council of Grafarvogur on June 7, 2022. The Chair is Fanný Gunnarsdóttir who was selected without a vote.
The resident councils are under the Human Rights & Democracy Office and the Office serves as the councils secretariat. Heimir Snær Guðmundsson works for the resident councils as project manager for the Human Rights & Democracy Office.
