Preschool
Gullteigur 19
105 Reykjavík
Hof Preschool is on Gullteigur in Reykjavík. It opened in June 1996 and originally had four divisions, but is now a six-division preschool with 115 children staying throughout the day. The groups are named Guladeild, Rauðadeild, Grænadeild, Bláadeild, Hvítadeild, and Svartadeild (Yellow, Red, Green, Blue, White, and Black). Laugardalur is within walking distance of the preschool along with Ásmundarsafn and many open playgrounds that are heavily visited by children and staff. The facilities are ideal for outdoor education, which is a major part of the preschool's work
Preschool Director: Særún Ármannsdóttir
Assistant Preschool Director: Stella Marteinsdóttir
Want to know more about Hof? In this very short video, we give a glimpse of the preschool activities. It was made by Erla Stefánsdóttir and Antonía Lárusdóttir for the Department of Education & Youth.
The values of Hof are respect, joy, and creativity
Positive, constructive communication and friendship are the cornerstones of preschool work at Hof, and we believe that the school curriculum is created through interaction between children and adults. These are the words of the American school specialist John Dewey (1859-1952), but the preschool draws its educational approach from his theories. Play is the guiding light of preschool work at Hof because free play is the most important learning and development path for children and their most natural form of expression.
Do you want to know more about the philosophy and daily operations of Hof? In Hof's school curriculum, you'll find detailed information about the school's philosophical emphasis and approach to play, learning, and work.
What's ahead for Hof? In the operational plan, you'll find, among other things, the school's internal and external evaluations for the last year, an improvement plan, the preschool calendar, and much more.
When does Hof have professional development days? In the preschool calendar, you'll find information about days off and various other details.
We are all in this together, and as the proverb goes it takes a village to raise a child. Reykjavík City preschools make targeted efforts to consult with and increase parent involvement in preschool activities. All Reykjavík City preschools have parent associations and parent councils.
Hof Preschool falls under North Center. North Center provides a wide range of services to the residents of Laugardalur and Háaleiti and is a comprehensive information source for municipal services. The Center provides welfare services, school services to preschool and primary schools, day care and recreational counseling, and various other services.
The Act on the Integration of Services in the Interest of Children’s Prosperity has come into effect. The goal is to ensure children and guardians receive the right assistance, at the right time, from the right parties. Families and children in need of early support have guaranteed access to a contact person in the child's immediate environment, such as in preschool or primary school. The contact person offers information and guidance on services and ensures that children and guardians have unhindered access to these services. Children, youth, and guardians can contact the school contact person to request integrated services.
The contact person for Hof is: Lilja Björk Kristinsdóttir

A new group has been added to the preschool and there are plans to build an extension to the preschool that will allow for 50 additional children to attend. The new extension should be ready in 2025. The construction is a part of the Bridging the Gap development initiative, which aims to bridge the gap between parental leave and preschool.
