Want to know more about Funaborg? In this very short video, we give a glimpse of the preschool activities. It was made by Erla Stefánsdóttir and Antonía Lárusdóttir for the Department of Education & Youth.
Funaborg's guiding principle is “Every time you do something for a child that the child could have done alone, you hold back the child’s development.”
At Funaborg, we believe that children are competent individuals who are capable and who have understanding, knowledge, and wants. Children become stronger when they have a social connection with their peers, teachers, parents, local environment, and society at large. They also gain faith in their own abilities and courage to solve their own problems and engage in complex communication patterns.
What's ahead for Funaborg? In Funaborg's operational plan, you'll find, among other things, the school's internal and external evaluations for the last year, an improvement plan, the preschool calendar, and much more.

We are all in this together, and as the proverb goes it takes a village to raise a child. Reykjavík City preschools make targeted efforts to consult with and increase parent involvement in preschool activities. All Reykjavík City preschools have parent associations and parent councils.
Funaborg Preschool falls under East Center. East Center provides a wide range of services to the residents of Árbær, Grafarholt, Grafarvogur, and Kjalarnes and is a comprehensive information source for municipal services. The Center provides welfare services, school services to preschool and primary schools, day care and recreational counseling, and various other services.
The Act on the Integration of Services in the Interest of Children’s Prosperity has come into effect. The goal is to ensure children and guardians receive the right assistance, at the right time, from the right parties. Families and children in need of early support have guaranteed access to a contact person in the child's immediate environment, such as in preschool or primary school. The contact person offers information and guidance on services and ensures that children and guardians have unhindered access to these services. Children, youth, and guardians can contact the school contact person to request integrated services.
The contact person for Funaborg is: Edda Sigrún Svavarsdóttir

The new forest house, Skógarhúsið, is an addition to Funaborg Preschool that opened in January 2022. The building can accommodate 24 children and the oldest preschoolers stay there. The forest house, Skógarhúsið, is a part of the Bridging the Gap development initiative, which aims to increase the number of preschool openings and bridge the gap between parental leave and preschool. The building of a new school extension is also planned. It will accommodate an additional 60 children and is scheduled to be opened by the end of 2025.
