A retrospective of the work of artist Anna Líndal, Expedition, will open in Reykjavík Art Museum – Kjarvalsstaðir, Saturday 30 Sept at 16h00.
The pieces displayed span Anna´s career of almost thirty years, the exhibition is a part of the museum´s goal of presenting the careers of distinguished, contemporary artists.
Anna has worked with various media and dealt with diverse subjects. Her art merges different ideas and processes which are based on two main themes: on one hand the conflict between private life and social expectations, and on the other hand, the human desire to understand and analyse nature through measurements.
The conflict between private life and social standing is most visible in Anna´s early works when she limited her resources to materials she could find in the home, thereby transforming the home into a habitat of creation. In later years Anna has dealt with man´s desire to understand nature in works which she largely bases on her own experience of staying outside in nature and participating in scientific expeditions.
The exhibition in Kjarvalsstaðir holds a new, extensive artwork, titled Expedition. It connects Anna´s early interest in the female role and gender based work methods to her later interest in the measuring of nature, staying in nature, and the relationship between science and art.
In relation to this retrospective, Reykjavík Art Museum issues a grand catalogue. Guðrún Erla Geirsdóttir writes about feminist issues in Anna´s work, William Fox covers her research on environmental issues and climate change, and Ólöf Gerður Sigfúsdóttir writes about the appearance of art research methodology in Anna´s work. The voice of the artist herself is present in an interview by Bjarki Bragason.
The curator and catalogue editor is Ólöf Kristín Sigurðardóttir, Museum Director at Reykjavík Art Museum. Elsa Yeoman, the chairman of Culture and Tourism in Reykjavík opens the exhibition.
Anna Líndal (b. 1957) graduated from the Iceland College of Art and Crafts in Iceland in 1986 and finished her Master’s degree at Slade School of Fine Art in London in 1990. In 2011-12 she did research-based studies at Sint Lucas School of Art in Antwerp, Belgium. Her work has been on show in all major exhibition areas in Iceland as well as internationally, for example in the International Biennials in Istanbul and Seoul.
